Start with fresh hardware or recycle?
« on: May 05, 2013, 11:42:48 AM »
Hi there.

So, I'm new to the ubermix game and I want to set up a test/pilot for a class at one of our elementary schools. I choosing this class because the teacher is not "techie" but it interested in tech and integrating it into his lessons. So my question is: should I just buy some new hardware and install ubermix or should I just try and recycle a few of our Dell 610/620/E6400 laptops? The targeted grade level is 4th, so I want to minimize the complexity if at all possible.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
David Thurston

Brittle, bulky laptops and 4th graders don't generally mix well, however they ought to work OK with ubermix. If I was going to do it, I'd probably make them relatively stationary. We've built labs with both donated and new equipment, desktops and laptops, with good success. Just put together an ubermix lab using brand new Acer VX275s and had no issues.
