Acer Aspire One 722 WiFi
« on: July 19, 2012, 12:19:08 PM »
Have a new shipment of 24 Acer AO722's.  Fresh install of ubermix 1.052 installed on build unit.  When attempting to connect to our wireless network with WPAPSK encryption the computer locks up and must be hard restarted.  Wired Ethernet is fine.  I've not yet applied the AMD video patch.  Can someone steer me to next steps?

Thanks!

RJ

Are you sure it's locking up? If you press ctrl-alt-f1 do you get to a terminal?

Pressing ctrl-alt-f1 does not get to a terminal.  Appears to be locked up with no use of keyboard or mouse.  Wireless icon in top right stops during scan animation on the second bar.

Thanks!

Open a terminal and do an lshw -C network and let me know what it says for your wireless adapter. They must have changed something...

Try this: open a terminal and sudo dpkg --purge bcmwl-kernel-source, then reboot and connect again.

Same result, but did require two reboots to bring it back up and one user/password login.

Now I can't boot past the ubuntu splash screen.

Re-installed again. Same result on first boot up, machine locked while attempting to connect. Hard restart, to terminal and sudo dpkg --purge bcmwl-kernel-source, result was no such package (bcmwl-kernel-source) installed, reboot and attempt connect again.  No wireless networks show up under network icon at top right, so manually add the network, upon attempting to close the Network Connections dialog box it locks up again.

Note: I've installed 3 different times using Option 1, and one time using Option 3 of the installation menu.

Thanks RJ

OK, this is kindof absurd, but seems to solve the problem. Reboot and get into BIOS setup, then enable network boot. Next go to the boot option and set the network adapter as the first boot device. Save BIOS settings and exit. When the device boots up it should be good. Let me know.

Just wanted to chime in that the BIOS order fix works for our Acer722. Ron, we have over 200 of these for use this year, I will post our other tweaks for this model later this week (like how to reduce the volume of the power cord unplug beep!).

Thanks! I appreciate the help.  We tested with a couple of D270's during the year in one grade.  The teacher loved them (she had a cart full of old iBook G4's).  We're excited to roll these 722's out to her class and are hopeful other teachers will be interested in them as well.  I've not figured out how to get Java working with Pearson's Successmaker 4.  Some have suggested Pearson will only allow Mac or Windows clients to run it.  If I could solve that issue there would be nothing stopping me from forklifting all old macs in favor of an ubermixed netbook!

Thanks again!

Try swapping out OpenJDK for the official Oracle JDK per the instructions here: http://forums.ubermix.org//index.php/topic,3.0.html

I would love to know if you get Pearson Successmaker to work on an Ubermix machine. We have some teachers using that system and I haven't had a chance to try and get it working on Linux.
