Creating a custom image
« on: June 06, 2014, 01:09:38 PM »
I followed the steps in the Rebuilidng the Base Image part of the Customization page. In essence all I added to the image were:
  • The Smarter Balanced Browser
  • The 32 bit libraries needed to make it run
  • The GAPPS icons
  • I modified the browser (firefox and chrome) homepages to open to my district home page
  • The Reminna RDP client to allow access to Windows terminal servers

After I did all these changes I rebooted it so I could run the advanced install, and chose: When the menu appears, select option "5. Expert Options" From the next menu, select option "1. Update the image on the key using this machine as a model".

I waited until it was finished, rebooted properly, but when i use the newly created key, it boots looking normal, but after the Ubuntu splash screen, i just get a cursor in the top left of the screen and nothing else, does not boot to the desktop. I am really wanting to create a boot key that has all my changes so that I can deploy to some labs. The changes are too many to retro on a basic install, mostly the smarter balanced changes.

Any idea what causes this?

I did create a different key by not going into the rebuilding bas image mode, but rather making the changes listed above, and then making a key from this model, but none of the software was installed, although the browser home pages were still there.

So a further note here, redid the entire operation from scratch, installed a new key followed the instructions to modify as in my prior post, justa adding the items listed there (minus the GAPPS icons). This time it boots to agraphical interface, but no menus appear, it is just the desktop I had set, and a bar at the bottom of the screen with the time in it, can't click on the desktop, no menus, nothing.

What step am i missing on making my own custom image? i really want to be able to modify the default by adding these few things, so that I do not have to modify 32 machines after install. There must be a mising step or something in the instructions for changing the base image, or adding the 32 bit libraries is breaking it.

Does anyone know if the smarter balanced browser will run i64 bit next year, and when it will be available. Adding the browser to 32 machines will be time consuming and I would like to get this process figured out this summer so I can start in September with a completely functional Ubermix key for my labs.
