I've been creating bootable Ubermix USB devices with rufus (http://rufus.ie) on Windows 10.  Rufus handles both .ISO and .IMG files so I use it for everything.

General Support / Can't succesfully create a bootable USB from 4.40 IMG
« Last post by pitch_a on March 07, 2020, 12:58:34 AM »
Hi there,

I've desperately tried to create a bootable USB from ubermix-key4.40.img following instructions given for either MAC OS, Windows and even Linux in your download page (http://ubermix.org/download.html).

I've also tried to create the USB by using Etcher (https://www.balena.io/etcher/) without success.

The computer where I want to install Ubermix is a Lenovo Ideapad 130S, in which I managed to install without any hassle Ubuntu MATE 18.04.

It would be highly appreciated if someone could verify whether the official image file is ok, I'm missing something or if there is any other way I could get the system installed in the aforementioned laptop.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

Ivan

General Discussion / Ubermix with Windows?
« Last post by CodeReub on December 07, 2018, 12:26:05 PM »
I am setting up an old laptop for a young nephew and while the computer does have a fresh install of Windows 10 and sufficient RAM and secondary memory to support it, I would like to get him started learning computing in a Linux environment.

Ubermix looked like a promising tool. I checked it out in the virtual machine and it looks like it has a lot of nice tools and resources that would help younger children feel comfortable in a Linux environment. I would like to use it, but the only problem is that my nephew is going to need the Windows environment to run at least one piece of proprietary software that is not available for Linux, does not work in Wine and the manufacturers have no intention of releasing the source code or supporting a Linux version of their software.

My first inclination was a dual boot, which I discovered is not possible with Ubermix because of the unique way it uses three partitions to prevent children damaging the OS. That brings me to my current dilemma.

I have identified the product ID for my Windows 10 and have made a startup USB stick for Windows 10. I am trying to decide if I wipe Windows from the laptop, install Ubermix and then add Virtualbox, will I be able to install the Windows OS within the virtual environment using the old product key?

Windows would still be on the same physical machine, it would just be in within a Linux virtual environment. I didn't really want to ask this on a Microsoft forum because I suspect they will say that it is not an appropriate use of their software.

The easiest solution, of course, would be to install a lightweight version of Linux alongside the Windows install and just add the applications from Ubermix that are appealing, but I do like the Ubermix concept as well as the appeal of making Windows a virtual afterthought on the machine as opposed to a startup alternative.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks,
Reub

General Support / Options for someone unable to boot from USB?
« Last post by twps on November 08, 2018, 09:23:38 AM »
I was hoping to use an older PC as a Linux desktop for my children, 4 & 7. I have been really impressed with what I have seen from Ubermix. However, my older PC cannot boot from USB. Are there alternatives for a boot from CD? I would like to install on the HDD in the desktop for long term use. Any experience or suggestions?

This has been failing for me at least a week.  I can begin the download, but it always ends up being around 20MB and that's impossible.

If I try to allow it to download through Google Sync it also fails:

Is there another way to acquire this download or is it corrupt and can be overwritten with a new copy?  I've downloaded the previous version some months ago without any difficulty so not sure whats going on.

I have this problem with my Internet Service Provider.  The cause of it is mostly because my ISP is terrible and blocking packets when a certain limit inbound or outbound is hit.  Usually, my issue is that my outbound ceiling of 300 kbps is hit and that slams the door shut on inbound traffic as well.  Sometimes the only way to resolve this is to cut down on your traffic by applying network usage reduction techniques such as:

You can verify if your ISP is indeed the problem by running a smoke ping service against your public IP address through http://www.dslreports.com/smokeping so long as your router is not blocking ping requests.  I think this may be free one or a few times, but costs a little money to have it run as a service throughout the day, but its worth it in order to get an idea of how long you're getting outages throughout the day.

If it's not your ISP then you likely have something misconfigured on your network or even a bad network cable involved.  It really looks to me though like your network is being dropped as communication is underway or waiting for a response.

Not using HTTPS to pass credentials is a big security risk.

I get that this is just a forum, but an account's user can lose credibility really fast if something starts doing a massive spam campaign.  It looks like there is a lot of attention to detail to mitigate spam with captchas and whatnot so why not just enable HTTPS?

This can be done for free too.  https://medium.freecodecamp.org/free-https-c051ca570324

Hi all, I'm still new to D-Bal but have installed ubermix on an older computer I got for the kids to play on.

I'm having a problem getting the internet to stay connected. I have no idea what's causing the problem.

Currently I have it connected via a lan cable to my windows 10 PC, which has a usb dongle connected to the wi-fi. Internet on my PC is solid, but on the ubermix computer it is patchy, maybe works for 4-5 minutes when I first boot it up and then nothing.

The same thing seems to happen if I try the wifi dongle directly from the ubermix computer, I get a connection for a few minutes when I first plug it in, then nothing.

The errors showing in chrome either say DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET or ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED.  Also a notification seems to pop up from now and then in the top right corner telling me the network has been disconnected.

I need some help troubleshooting this to figure out exactly where the problem lies, any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

That's an odd issue. I've never had something like that. When I had internet connection problems on ubuntu, it either worked or it didn't. I'd love to know what you did to fix this, if you managed to fix it that is, Eli.
