Hardware Specific / Re: AMD proprietary drivers in Ubermix 1.062?
« on: November 16, 2012, 09:55:10 AM »
On my AAO 722 with AMD I downloaded Catalyst 12.10 from the AMD website and ran the install script. Suspend works, but I am not sure if I am getting the performance/battery life boost I had from earlier attempts to install catalyst, so perhaps it isn't really installing. Any idea how to test, or some graphics benchmarks to run to measure performance?

General Support / Re: Random Guest Session
« on: September 11, 2012, 08:21:37 AM »
We have had this issue as well on our Acer 722. Have the students type the word "password" to log back in as the user. They will lose any open windows and unsaved work, but if they reopen firefox usually all of the tabs they had open will reopen. I suspect there is an issue with the X window system that is causing this random log out (I searched "random log out Ubuntu 12.04" and see several bugs reported).

General Support / Re: Problems with Cheese

We had the same issue with Cheese freezing up on video record. I ended up just removing Cheese from the menu to prevent folks from accidentally crashing the computer. I am going to try WebCam toy (a chrome web app) as an alternative for fun photos.

General Support / Re: Simple Updates and wine
« on: August 09, 2012, 09:05:15 AM »
I will try out this option. It seems I will have  to figure out the ppd file to use based on the driver listed. As I am writing I think I l actually add all the printers on the image and then use the script to delete printers from particular rooms. I believe I can use grep and hostname and if statements to say if your hostname contains RM48 then deleter printers named Room49, Room 50, etc.

This way even if I don't get the script working the students can choose the correct default printer.

General Support / Simple Updates and wine
« on: August 08, 2012, 11:58:04 AM »
We sadly need Wine to install Type To Learn which is a 1.1 GB program on our netbooks. I resize the base partition to 6 GB and then boot into the generic file system and everything installs and runs fine. I can rebuild the image on the key (which is 3.2 GB so it must include the TTL info) and image another system and everything works fine as well. However if I boot into the -aufs file system and change a printer and try to build simple updates it creates a 1.1 GB simple update file because wine is storing the C-drive in a .win folder in the Home directory. This makes the simple update process really long, the restore process take a long time, and ends up making the key larger than 4 GB. I tried removing the .wine folder from the user.tar.gz archive but then when I applied the updates TTL didn't work correctly.

So I can either set the printers for each room in the -generic file system and have a different base image for each classroom (only 6 classrooms so not the end of the world), or figure out a way for the simple updates to not include the .wine folder and also not overwrite the .wine folder, or some other genius idea  8)

Q&A / Re: Slow windows (Samba) shares direcotry display

Looks like it is related to network and server speed, because the shares load faster on better connections for both Ubermix and vanilla Ubuntu. Sorry for the false alarm.

I haven't tested a vanilla Ubuntu wireless, but I did notice that when I had netbooks running on Ubermix based on 10.04 and wireless they loaded Samba shares quickly, but 11.04 was slower.

I will grab a 12.04 vanilla Ubuntu laptop tomorrow and try that out.

Q&A / Slow windows (Samba) shares direcotry display
« on: August 06, 2012, 02:54:23 PM »
Using 1.052 when we navigate to a Windows share it takes a long time to display the directory. The time is proportional to the number of folders and files in the directory, so our public share folder for the school takes about 15 seconds to display contents.
This isn't happening with vanilla Ubuntu machines.

Q&A / Re: chnging the host name
« on: August 02, 2012, 07:01:57 AM »
Hello,

There is now a feature in the USB key to update the hostname. After you install Ubermix, press 5 to go to expert options, then choose option 5 from the expert menu. You can then type in a hostname and reboot.

I would love to know if you get Pearson Successmaker to work on an Ubermix machine. We have some teachers using that system and I haven't had a chance to try and get it working on Linux.

Q&A / Re: clonzilla not taking my ubermix netbook as an image
« on: July 30, 2012, 08:00:38 AM »
I haven't used Clonzilla, but I will say that with 30 USB keys we imaged 200 netbooks in a few hours so it can go really fast. In fact the slow step was recording the serial numbers on the new machines.

Q&A / The .bld file
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:58:49 AM »
Hello Jim,

I have rebuilt an image (using expert options->1) and noticed that the 0 KB .bld file kept the name of the key (which was a different version of Ubermix) and not the name of the image on the machine. Does this file matter or can I just copy over/rename the .bld file to the correct version?

Just wanted to chime in that the BIOS order fix works for our Acer722. Ron, we have over 200 of these for use this year, I will post our other tweaks for this model later this week (like how to reduce the volume of the power cord unplug beep!).

General Support / Ubermix 1.x text on startup
« on: July 24, 2012, 11:43:52 AM »
I am easing back from summer and getting the last tweaks on our Ubermix based on 1.052 for deployment and had a question about some text that displays on boot.
After an initial purple screen, there are 30ish lines of text that mostly list a number then:

init- failed to create pty - disabling logging for job (I couldn't attach a screenshot)

Then the Ubuntu logo shows up

There were always 5 or 6 text prompts on boot up, but this many could give users a bad impression. Ideally the system wouldn't have any text on boot except if a verbose option was selected. Any ideas on how to suppress these messages?

Thanks a bunch (especially for adding the wl driver for broadcom into the main Ubermix image!)

General Discussion / Re: Ubermix with standard desktop environment?
« on: May 28, 2012, 08:43:41 AM »
I have done this and it is fairly straightforward (but I haven't created an .img file of the customization). You need to boot into the -generic file system and in the software center install LXDE (or another desktop environment). Then you need to open terminal and type alacarte to get to the menu editor. Click to show the login options under the System menu. Then go to the system menu and in the login settings click to make changes and type in the password (which is password). You can then have the system auto-login to the other desktop environment (or allow you to choose your environment at login instead of auto-login).
