General Discussion / Ubermix with standard desktop environment?
« on: May 28, 2012, 12:15:41 AM »
Hi,

I really like the quick recovery option with aufs, and I was wondering if it would be interesting to have an Ubermix version that uses a full desktop environment instead of the Ubermix launcher. It might make more sense for people installing it on desktops or full-size laptops.

Or even for my mother-in-law's laptop. I know I would love to have that quick recovery there!

I'm just floating the idea. I am not particularly advocating for it, or for any desktop environment in particular. Unity, XFCE, LXDE are the ones I know best, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

What do people think about this?

Yes, all of them 1215B. We have almost 200.

For this coming school year we will get a few more to replace the ones that have been more severely damaged by our students, but it will be a minimal number. It will be the newer generation of the same model, or as close as possible.
Definitely sticking to the AMD chips, as they offer higher performance, and to stay consistent with the current model.

If I had known back when we got started that I would get the chance to go with Ubermix, I would have probably chosen Intel, but...

I'll check the BIOS version and get a FreeDOS usb stick ready.

Thanks a lot for your help! Looking forward to trying out the new version next Tuesday.

We have shown the Asus 1215B running Ubermix 1.0 to a few students and teachers, and the feedback has been very positive. As it looks now, unless I can't get suspend/resume working, we will very likely go with Ubermix!

I just tried installing the AMD drivers using the download from the Wiki, and it gave an error: it can't build for kernel 3.2.0-22-generic.
The fglrx driver is now activated anyway, but I think it's an older version. Suspend is still causing troubles, though.

Neeeeeever mind. I feel stupid now.

In "System Settings", "Appearance", which is exactly what I get when I right-click on the desktop in standard Ubuntu.

Hi,

I am trying to get the Asus 1215B going with Ubermix 1.0. I am also having suspend/resume issues.
Did you make any progress?

I still haven't tried using the AMD proprietary drivers. From a forum post in Ubuntuforums, I changed one option in the BIOS: C6 mode is OFF. It seems to help: suspend/resume works, but then when you shut down, you need to take the battery out to get it to start again!

Worth asking before I go on a long Google hunt...

How-to / Changing the Desktop Wallpaper

Hello!

Another question: how to change the wallpaper in the Ubermix 1.0 version?

Can students change it on their own? I couldn't find where. I'm just used to right-clicking the desktop in Ubuntu...

How-to / Re: Pre-configuring Wireless connection

By the way, the anti-spam filter for posts was asking me:
What is the state capitol of Georgia?

Not being American, it took me a while to consider that the question might be "What is the state capital of Georgia?", especially since Georgia DOES have a Capitol, as I now know very well.

How-to / Pre-configuring Wireless connection
« on: May 23, 2012, 09:56:44 PM »
Hello,

We're looking into deploying Ubermix next school year. Great job, and thanks for providing it freely for everyone else. I really like the launcher!

We have an Active Directory network connected to our Wireless using RADIUS, WPA2 Enterprise and AES, PEAP authentication.

Can we change the wireless configuration dialog so it uses PEAP by default?

For the laptop carts we can use one username and password in all of them, with Auto-Reset turned on so the laptops are kept clean. Can we preconfigure the Wireless settings in this case?

Thanks!!!
