General Discussion / Re: How to make Lubuntu work like Ubermix
« on: September 29, 2015, 11:22:42 PM »
Hi,
Did you try the normal version or the Lite version?
For older computers, you should definitely try using version 2.3L.

If not, I would go a different route, but this is not easy and I would only consider it if your Linux experience is fairly high: make Ubermix look like Lubuntu or Xubuntu (I prefer Xubuntu).
You can do:
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
or
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

Then switch to the Xubuntu session on log-on.
Afterwards you would need to do some cleanup of the standard Ubermix environment to avoid conflicts.

To do this properly, you need to do it with the customizing image instructions of the wiki, and create your own custom Ubermix key.

What do you think? I hope someone else will chip-in as well.

Trying again with torrents. Christmas holiday project: seed Ubermix.

I've uploaded a torrent here:

and here:

I'm setting up two computers to seed, but it won't be fast. At least I hope you can resume the download as long as you need until you have the files. The torrent has both 2.12 versions, normal and light.

Let me know if it works!

Here is a link to a Google Drive folder that has both images.
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B0A6Hg3EPtx4bXh6Qm42ZmxwX3M&usp=sharing

I think you can try the "Move to my Drive" option, and then the Google Drive client to download it. I'll try that now.

Once I have both files (I hadn't upgraded to this version yet), I'll put them somewhere else.

@ewald: Do you want version 2.12L or 2.12 standard?
I'll see if I can get it downloaded and share it somewhere else.

In any case, it's hosted in Google's servers, so there is not much that can be done about downloading issues. Nobody here works for Google.

If you read the information about the partition layout, and all the features about quick-restore, you would realize that this is not a "normal" Linux distribution. You obviously have a lot of experience with Linux, and certain expectations on how it should work that are simply not true about Ubermix.
The quick-restore feature is in my opinion the main feature of Ubermix, and it is the feature that makes Ubermix require a custom install procedure, and makes it impossible to test as a Live CD.

I'd recommend using VirtualBox or other virtualization software to test it out.

We will happily refund you your Ubermix licensing costs :)

General Support / Re: Sync User Home problem with Ubermix 2.0.4

In the past, I was able to get it to work as well by using Ctrl-Alt-F1, Ctrl-Alt-F2... all the way to F7.

This switches the vTerm, the first 6 are text, the 7th is usually the GUI, though of course not in this case.

In our case, I created different Ubermix images that connected to different folders in our web server. So each hardware model had its own specific update.sh. Faster, cleaner, and more reliable than using hardware detection in Bash scripts.

However, if you need to detect models, the fastest solution that I found and used for a while was the command dmidecode.
It reads BIOS information, so it's pretty much instant.

For example, try:
sudo dmidecode -t 1
or combined with grep
sudo dmidecode -t 1 | grep "Product"

Read here for more types of information that you can retrieve.

Sorry, didn't see this while on holidays until today.
Did you try Firefox with the DownThemAll extension?
I'm afraid I can't really use torrents right now, so yeah, peers are offline. Plus, it was for rc2, not 2.0 or 2.02, the latest one.

Hi,

I live in a country where connection is never reliable, so getting the new Ubermix image is always a challenge.

Here is what works great for me: Firefox + DownThemAll extension.

Give it a go.

Hardware Specific / Re: sound only works for one user account
« on: April 24, 2014, 09:11:48 PM »
Check which groups your new user belongs to.
You can do it by opening a terminal, and running the command "groups".

As root, you can also run it for a particular user:
sudo -i (to become root)
groups user (to check which groups the default user belongs to)
groups yournewusername (to compare with the above)

If those lists of groups don't match, you can do:
adduser yournewusername nameofthegroup

Maybe this will help? Pay attention to groups related to sound.

General Discussion / Re: LibreOffice in a Microsoft Office world
« on: December 20, 2013, 07:36:42 PM »
I am under the impression that you work in an organization with limited budget.

I think the only approach now is to go up in the hierarchy, and really address it from ideological perspective, with support from administrators above:
- LibreOffice vs Office and the Digital Divide.
- Using LibreOffice and purchasing support from local, South-American companies vs. Microsoft. Sending money to help the U.S. economy vs. the local economy.
- Talk about Munich migration, and there was a recent article about an Italian city hall where the employees chose to migrate to LibreOffice to avoid a salary cut for everyone.
- As a school, as educators, we want to encourage legal software, discourage software piracy, but at the same time, not put a financial burden on our students and their families.

So, let the teachers know that this isn't "change just for the sake of change", but that there are valid arguments about it, and particularly arguments that are very compatible with the goals and philosophy of educators.

I used this at my school:

Based on these links:

Good luck!
