General Discussion / Re: Ubermix with standard desktop environment?
« on: May 28, 2012, 01:48:32 PM »
You beat me to a blog post on this one, but 1.0 now has both Unity and Gnome classic on it by default, as well as the ubermix launcher. To switch, simply Logout from the Power/Settings menu, then when you see the password prompt, click the white circle immediately to the right of the user name. Select the desktop environment you want to use and login with your password (default is "password"). You'll then have all the ubermix underpinnings with the stock environment.

General Support / Re: USB boots into GRUB instead of menu

No errors or messages? Check your downloaded image file and make sure you have the whole thing - the file should be ~2GB. Also try a different USB key. It sounds as though there is either something wrong with the image file or the key.

What kind of device is it? Could be an issue with USB 3.0. If you have both USB 3 and USB 2 ports, try the key in a USB 2 port.

Are all of your machines 1215Bs? How many do you have?

How-to / Re: Can I install alongside Windows?

OK, so boot into Ubuntu and open a terminal, then do a sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda and post your output. I'll follow up with instructions.

Try the CD Install method described here: http://wiki.ubermix.org/page/CD_Install

We have a bunch of netbooks in a cart that is set aside for staff development setup to dual-boot. It's technically doable, but pretty complex to setup - and I'm not sure it's worth the trouble. ubermix uses three partitions alone, and Windows 7 wants another 2 at least, which makes it tricky to get going.

An easier solution is to run either ubermix (less preferable) or Windows (preferable) as a virtual machine using Virtualbox. That way you can choose your preferred operating system (hopefully ubermix) and run the other when you have the need.

If you decide to run ubermix as a virtual machine, install it in Virtualbox using the CD Install instructions at http://wiki.ubermix.org/page/CD_Install

How-to / Re: Pre-configuring Wireless connection
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:24:39 PM »
If you setup the wireless as part of "Rebuilding the base image", as described on http://ubermix.org/customization.html, the settings will stick on a reset.

Thanks for the tip on the capitol of Georgia - I should have thought of that!

How-to / Re: Changing the Desktop Wallpaper
« on: May 24, 2012, 11:20:47 PM »
Glad you found it. You can also set the desktop to any picture you have on your system by double-clicking to open it and choosing "Set as Desktop Background" from the "File" menu in the image viewer.

FYI, there is a bug in beta2 that prevents images in paths with spaces in the from working. This has been fixed in rc1, which I expect to post on Tuesday  :)

I asked Acer for a demo 722 unit. Hopefully I'll have it soon so that I can poke around at this problem. Seems the Fusion-based systems are a bit twitchy.

I have an old 1015B in the office, which is essentially the same motherboard. I'll give it a shot on Tuesday when I get back. In the mean time, the proprietary driver should work fine with that model, including suspend/resume. The battery remove to boot problem is the sort of thing you see when the video card is flaky or the thing tries to go into C6 mode.

Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed, which you can do using a USB key running FreeDOS. Use unetbootin to create the FreeDOS key :-)

Creative solution. I'm curious if this is still a problem with 1.0. If you get the chance to test it, let me know how it goes.

Scratch that - looks like the driver is no longer part of compat-wireless. Looks like the issue might have been fixed upstream. Just out of curiosity, have you tried 1.0 alpha on it? It has a very new kernel so it should have a newer driver.

I've seen something like that on other older Dells. A driver update might fix it. Try the following:

  • Go to http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download and get the latest bleeding-edge
  • Open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and tar -xjf Downloads/compat*
  • cd compat*
  • ./scripts/driver-select iwlagn
  • make && sudo make install
  • sudo depmod -a
  • sudo reboot
