Probably has something to do with the script running as root and a missing environment. Instead of sudo, try:

su -c "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings show-desktop \"['']\"" - user

Should work better.

California has a specific browser for CA - although it looks like it's pretty much the same. I can build a package of the generic one as well - give me a few days to work on that.

The lightweight launcher currently relies on gnome2 libraries and needs an older version of ubuntu to run at the moment. We are working on converting it to gnome3 (which ubermix 2 is based on) so that it can be an option for verision 2 and up, however it is still a bit too buggy in its current state to be of any use. ubermix 1 is still a viable option, so if you prefer the launcher I'd use it for now, and stay tuned for an update in the future.

Only way I can think of without a server would be Google Drive or Dropbox. Could use auto-reset to make sure that the machines stay consistent from bootup to bootup. See http://wiki.ubermix.org/page/Auto-Reset

Did you update from 1.x? Try a clean install instead (ie enter "erase" when prompted by the install key).

Try this: when you see the small icons, press esc and then set to nomodeset under "Other options". Might want to experiment with all of those to see if one will let it boot. Also might try a CD install, as some older systems really don't like booting from a USB key. See http://wiki.ubermix.org/page/CD_Install
