General Support / Any way to store UEFI settings on an image?

I have 100+ HP Touchscmart AIO systems to install Ubermix 3.1.  These systems are set to UEFI by default in BIOS.  I can image each system fine if I use the UM 3.1 USB directly on each machine, using UEFI settings.  It boots fine under UEFI.

My question -  is there a way to store the UEFI settings when I create a USB image from this particular computer.  I like to pre-image my hard drives but the UEFI settings don't seem to store the UEFI settings on the UM 3.1 USB I created.

I know I can do each system one at a time, but it would sure help to pre-image the hard drives with a UEFI settings.  Any suggestions?

Hardware Specific / Hangs at Loading Ubermix...

Installed 2.24 on Thinkpad T60.  Once installed, it works fine on the first bootup.  I shutdown, then restart.  It hangs at "Loading Ubermix...".  I've tried reinstalling several times and tried different hard drives - same result.

Any suggestions?

No I had not tried to increase the key size since I've never had to do that on all the 1.x versions.  But I tried those steps this evening, but I get a non-bootable disk error.  I tried the steps on multiple flash drives, but got the same result.   I tried different variations for a few hours, but still couldn't get it working.  I thought there might be hidden files (.disk & .trash)- made them viewable and copied them, but still no luck.  I used GParted to make sure the boot flag was set, but still same "non-bootable disk" error.

I even tried using GParted to just expand the existing UM partition into the unallocated space.  The flash drive would boot correctly to the UM menu but still wouldn't take the simple updates to make UM workable - same EOF errors as before I increased the UM partition size.

Yes, I do get EOF errors.  Below is the message from Apply updates.  I was using a 16GB flash drive thinking that it may be because my 4GB flash drive was out of space.

General Support / How to make Ubermix 2.1L automatically start DVDs - solved

I use Ubermix 2.1L for older computers that are refurbished and given to students.  One of the problems that I encountered was that some students reported the system would not play commercial DVDs.  After verifying it wasn't a DVD drive hardware problem, I determined that Ubuntu 14.04 really doesn't have the final step done to allow DVDs to play.  Here's all that is required to get UM 2.1L starting and playing DVDs without problem.

1. From the desktop, use CTRL-ALT-T to get to the command line.  Make sure you are connected to a network.

2. Type the following on the command line:  sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

3. After it finishes, close the terminal window.  Put in a DVD.  When it starts, you are asked to verify the application to use.  I use the default (videos) and check the box to always use this application.

4. DVD will run as expected.

I would guess this should be done then apply simple updates so you won't need to do this on each installation.  Maybe it can already be done in the next UM version?

I work with a computer refurbishing group and we've been using 2.1L which works great with older systems, but I've run into a problem I didn't see in previous UM versions.

After putting a few shortcuts on the desktop and modifying LibreOffice to write MS Office files, I attempt to get simple updates working.   As in the past, I used menu choice 5 from the flash drive boot, then create simple updates, they seem to write to the flash drive without a problem. 

However, when I attempt to use them on another system (choosing #4 Fast Image or just choosing #2 Simple updates) there are some problems.  First, the whole process looks normal, but it finishes without any notification, just going back to the UM main menu on the flash drive.  When I attempt to just press enter to reboot, it wants to start the whole imaging process again.  I've let it go through again, but seems to get stuck in a loop.  If I interrupt the process, then reboot the system that has just been imaged, it doesn't want to keep the simple updates.  It also does something weird with the home partition, making it only about 8 GB regardless of the size of the hard drive.

I can continue to use 2.1L by itself with no problems, but just have to make the changes (desktop icons, LibreOffice config) manually on each system imaged.  It would be nice to have simple updates working again.

I have tried this using different flash drives and different computer hardware - same result.  Any suggestions?

General Discussion / UberMix on Mac Mini

Our organization (2nd Chance Computers - Modesto) recently received several Intel-based Mac Mini's as donations.  Since our goal is distribute computers free to students, preferably using UberMix, we set a goal to install UberMix 1.3 on the Mini. 

As it turned out it wasn't as complicated as we anticipated.  We were able to boot a USB Parted Magic to wipe the drive, but later couldn't get the USB UM image to boot.  Finally I downloaded the CD-based UM iso, which booted directly to the USB UM image.  The UM image installed at normal speed without problems. 

The biggest problem I had was getting the boot CD out of the drive so the hard drive could boot.  After a little researching, it turns out you can hold down the left mouse button on boot to eject the CD.  After that the system booted easily with no errors on first boot.

I hope this helps anyone who has older Intel-based Mac Minis.

After playing with UM 1.3 I noticed several things missing that were in previous versions.

For my use, I want my clients to immediately change their password, but the User Accts icon in System Settings is not present in 1.3.

Also, while I don't currently have a need for it, I noticed that the "Main Menu" icon is not available in System Tools for UM 1.3. 

Were these changes by design?  (I didn't notice anything regarding these in changelog).

The second group of steps did the job.  The first set of steps produced colorful, but unreadable characters and lines.

Well, it took me about 30 reboots to finally get the ctrl-alt-f1 to work, but it finally did.  I did your command as above and rebooted.  No problems now getting UM 1.3 to boot as expected.  Is this something I need to do then add it to my simple updates or is there a change you will be making for the next update?

Using 1.3 I have a problem that I didn't encounter in 1.083.   Basically the boot process just loops with a flash of a mouse cursor, followed by a blank screen, repeating the process indefinitely.

I verified the download checksum, installed on 2 different flash drives, installed on 4 different hard drives, installed on 2 different computers with completely different motherboards and video.  I.083 works fine on all of these hard drives, computers, and flash drives.

Not sure what to make of it.  I can email a video of the process if needed, but doesn't look like the forum will allow me to upload much.

Anyone else having problems with 1.3?  Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.  Since this is the only system that has this problem out of say 250 different computers, I installed Linux Mint 9 which worked fine with the video card and monitor.  I look forward to using UM 1.3.

Yes, missing letters especially from the upper right menu, including the menu dropdowns.

The OS is English.  I've used this same flash drive many times to install, but I also tried a new download and a new flash drive.  No difference.

I am using UberMix 1.082 on a variety of both older laptops and desktop that I donate to students.  It has been working great on 99% of all the systems on which it is installed.

However, I've run into a problem that is obviously a video card drive issue.  When the system boots, the text menus are missing many letters.  When I go to a terminal and type "sudo restart lightdm" everything comes back to normal.  I've tried putting "nomodeset" as suggested places in grub (as per other forum posts), but all it does is come up in 640x480 resolution.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 2400 with an Intel Corporation 82845G/GL on board video card (as per lspci).

Any suggestions?
