General Support / Mouse Dead Zone - Invisible cinnamon-screensaver window in middle of screen.

This is rather odd.  We were getting reports of students unable to click their mouse pointer in certain areas of the screen.

Further investigation reveals that this is an empty, invisible window named "cinnamon-screensaver" using xwininfo.  Not quite sure how to approach this, but we would prefer a surgical fix to a brute force, nuke-it-from-orbit approach.

I somewhat suspect this may have something to do with saved session data, and something autostarting, but so far have not found the solution.

I CAN tell you, that removing cinnamon-screensaver is NOT the fix.  The cinnamon GUI is NOT happy without it.

General Support / apt-get dist-upgrade resultins in rror "an error ccurred while mounting /ro

Not sure what package is causing this but in preparing our 2.x master for reimaging this summer I grabbed all updates. 

On reboot I get

"an error occurred while mounting /ro"

"Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"

General Support / Cannot update google-chrome-stable on 1.4

We plan on re-imaging with 2.x this summer, but need to get our current 1.4 units updated with the latest firefox and especially chrome, but the update fails with insufficient disk space.  We would obviously prefer to use the update script and not have to go touch 700 devices...

Any thoughts?  Tricks?

How-to / Adding items to user's favorites

Been hunting for a clean way to script the maintenance of the launcher's "Favorites" panel...

Ideally I could add, remove, or modify it's contents via the commandline.

So far the only things I've found involve .desktop files.  Looking for a clean way to do this vi gsettings or whatever the best tool might be.

They are currently saved as directories under .gconf/desktop/unity/launcher/favorites.  each directory has it's own %gconf.xml file containing settings for the directory (if it's a container) or the link (contains elements fro mkthe .desktop filespec.

General Support / Incorporating options in /etc/default/grub

Running into an option on a group of systems that erroneously report a second display as connected (LVDS-1)

Was able to fix it in /etc/default/grub with

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="video=LVDS-1:d"

to disable this monitor.

ran update-grub, which then brought us to the "missing aufs" issue.  Tried the solution mentioned in the forum, and the above changes are gone.

Is there a better way to do this, ideally via the update.sh script?  I had initially tried using lshw information, but it was a bit problematic to identify the hardware and lshw is too slow.  xrandr --ouput LVDS1 --off works, but will break all the netbooks and any laptop running ubermix, so we have to be able to identify the hardware.

General Support / Install asks about secondary hard disk?

Trying to help another district - same Acer Aspire V5-131 we have, the ubermix install (option 1) asks to configure the primary and secondary hard drive. Never seen any mention of a secondary drive.

When the user answers yes and the process completes, the system boots to a purple screen and hangs.

He also can no longer mount the USB key.

Any thoughts?  Could it be seeing the USB as the primary or secondary?

General Discussion / Spare units and printer assignment by host name

We're currently assigning printers by hostname using the update.sh script.  We're looking at how to have hot spares ready, which is not a big issue until it comes to printing.  Has anyone dealt with this yet?  We're trying to eliminate the need for a visit from a tech, and also eliminate the need to train teachers on the hostname setting process.

Any thoughts?

thought it was fixed.  the issue is only in the aufs kernel.  generic works fine...

My sound device shows as "dummy output"  Tried a few things (switch to ALSA, which sees the intel soundcard but still no sound.

Any ideas?

Ran into this, actually a pretty simple fix...

Create a directory (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Create 51-clickpad.conf and insert the following:

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "Default clickpad buttons"
MatchDriver "synaptics"
Option "SoftButtonAreas" "50% 0 82% 0 0 0 0 0"

#Next 3 items added just for the HP Mini to better control the clickpad
Option "LockedDrags" "1"
Option "BottomEdge" "4000"
Option "AreaBottomEdge" "4445"

General Support / Acer V5 screen goes white?

Just about got our image ready for production.  Noticing that when left alone the screen goes white.  Does not appear to have xscreensaver or anything similar installed (which is fine - they suck up power).  I can foresee this being a complaint post-deployment.  Any ideas what I should be looking for to fix this?  I need to upload the image to CDW asap to ensure arrival before June 30 :/

Hardware Specific / Acer V5-131 brightness very low

Cannot get the brightness level to stick.  When it boots the screen goes very dim.  Any thoughts on how to remedy this?
