Hey everyone,

If you are interested in Open Source in education, come join this Subreddit:

Still early days, but it should become a great resource for everyone involved.

See you there!

Hey,
Just a heads-up: Cinnamon 3.6 just got released, and it gets installed when users do updates.

The most noticeable side effect is Onboard and the Cinnamon On-screen Keyboard applet clash with each other, at least visually. I can't get Onboard to switch from a floating icon to using a status icon.
The "touch-setup" script I think will need to be revised.

Other than that, so far everything seems ok, and I guess improved.

General Support / Re: Problems on ACER Travelmate B115

Yes, for a general user, with your laptop (or any laptop) you are better off with any of the standard Ubuntu versions.
Go ahead and give it a try.
You will also find that they have a forum section in Spanish:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/c/multilingual/spanish

I'm in that community too:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/users/UrkoM/summary

I would suggest that you use Ubuntu MATE 16.04.2, and 64bits if your computer can do it (it probably can).

Hi,
First of all, sorry for the long time without a reply.
Second, I think using Ubermix as a private user is not such a great idea. A lot of the thought process behind Ubermix is for meeting the needs of schools.
I would recommend that you check out other Linux distributions with more active communities of users. This forum is mostly used by the IT system administrators of schools, with our own busy schedules.

What were your reasons for using Ubermix?
Lately I have recommended people Ubuntu MATE as a great option for beginners.
http://ubuntu-mate.org/
It has a tool (MATE Tweak) that can make it look like Windows, Mac, or other systems.
They also have a very healthy community of users, and a lot of them Spanish-speakers.
https://ubuntu-mate.community/
Let me know if you want some tips in that direction.

I may have found a really really really good solution:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051#c436

Two scripts are provided by the author of that post, a couple of posts above (and again right below).
One of them disables all C6 power-saving states, and enables the C7 states. Apparently Bay Trail Intel CPUs have a bug with C6 states.
Using this script from /etc/rc.local, you should be able to run Bay Trail devices with standard kernels, without any parameters, and still with battery saving.
I will test later, but it sounds really good!

I am testing today with the latest standard kernel of Ubuntu 16.04, 4.4.0-34, and it seems very stable. I think the Ubuntu kernel developers may have backported the fixes.

This is great news for a lot of people out there :)

EDIT: Looks like I spoke too soon. According to the kernel bug report, people are still experiencing the freezes with kernel 4.4.0-34.
I am going to test kernel 4.6.7 (I am having a separate issue with ath10k_pci wifi and kernel 4.7.2, so I am hunting for a better kernel).
According to the bug report kernel 4.6.3 or higher has solved the issue as well.

Hi,

I am running my Asus TP200SA (or E205SA) laptops with standard Ubuntu for this reason. By applying the latest kernel 4.7.2 from the Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA, I have managed to get very stable machines, without the cstate parameter.

That parameter turns off powersaving features of the processor, which can increase heat and shortens battery life.
So... I guess it would be great if Jim could make a kernel for Ubermix based on 4.7.2 :)

Hardware Specific / Asus TP200SA: will it ubermix? :)
« on: March 17, 2016, 06:28:03 PM »
As per the subject: I am looking at the Asus Vivobook Flip TP200SA, which I can get for a really nice price with really nice specs. It seems to be very interesting for lower grades in my school.

Has anyone gotten their hands on it? Linux and Ubermix compatibility?
Thanks!

PS: I'll try to get a loaner to test it myself, but I thought I'd ask first :)

General Support / Re: iTalc sees ip addresses but not hostnames
« on: February 22, 2016, 09:07:00 PM »
Hi,
This issue is related to your DHCP and DNS server. Not a lot you can do from your end, without the help of the system administrator in charge of those servers. The DHCP server should be informing the DNS server of the hostnames that register, so they become accessible by hostname.

Alternatively, if your system administrator won't help, look at Avahi, ".local" addresses.
Open a Terminal, and type:
avahi-browse -a

Or try pinging one of your ubermix systems name, followed by ".local".

Hardware Specific / MacBook hangs during shutdown or reboot
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:49:50 PM »
Hi,
I am trying out Ubermix 2.32 on an old white MacBook, model MacBook7,1.
There is some problem when shutting down or rebooting, and it gets stuck. No error message, even when turning off the graphics mode. Looking at the console messages, it just stops at the last line that says shutting down or restarting. In other laptops, that is the last thing you see before it actually reboots, so I can't see what can be going wrong.

I tried different "reboot=" options with Grub, but it made no difference, from this article:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/523638/why-does-ubuntu-freeze-during-reboot-14-04-lts

I have tried other Linux versions, and reboot/shutdown works (Linuxt Mint 17.3, Ubuntu 15.10). Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi,

The Ubermix image has grown beyond 2Gb in the later versions.
Just as a test, I took the large file base_image.gz.aa, uncompressed it with gunzip, and then recompressed it with xz.
The original base_image.gz.aa is 2.4Gb
The file base_image.xz is 1.8Gb
The price to pay would be a longer time to create a customized Ubermix stick (xz at maximum compression is significantly slower than gzip), but would help people with downloading the image, and allow everyone to continue using smaller USB sticks.

Just a suggestion! :)

General Support / Re: Mapping network drive
« on: October 08, 2015, 05:17:12 PM »
Hi,
I think you must have made changes to the /etc/fstab file while booted in aufs mode. If you opened the file and saved it even without making any changes, while booted in aufs mode, then the aufs version of the file takes precedence over the version in the generic partition.

You can solve it "properly" by using the boot menu option to reset the system changes (with or without resetting the user data), but then you will lose any other changes you made in aufs mode.

Or you can workaround it while you continue testing by doing this:
sudo cp /ro/etc/fstab /etc/fstab

( The /ro folder shows you the generic partition in read-only mode, so you can move changes you made there into the aufs mode easily )

But remember to try a full reset of your Ubermix machine before you release it for student use.

On a side note: Have you tried the Xubuntu desktop? I find it almost as fast as Lubuntu, but more mature, more well-rounded. I find Lubuntu has some rough edges for being a full desktop environment. If your concern is about making it look more like Windows, in Xubuntu you can delete the bottom panel, and move the top panel to the bottom. And that's all, it's almost Windows.

Hi,

First thing to check would be: Is the /etc/fstab content correct when you boot in aufs mode?

Have you tried adding:
mount -a
at the end of /etc/rc.local?

If not, and taking advantage of Ubermix password-less sudo, you could look into running "sudo mount -a" on user login. Or since this is a network drive, and you need network anyway, have you set up the Ubermix Remote Updates? You could run the mount command on the updates, which would give you more flexibility going forward (you might want to move that server one day).

That looks honestly awesome.
I am Spanish, so not a problem to understand it, but do you know if there are resources in English?

Hey,
Just saw this now. Another option is Clonezilla. I have used it in the past with great success.
