General Support / Re: iTalc sees ip addresses but not hostnames
« on: March 10, 2016, 12:35:44 PM »
Thanks! That was very helpful - especially the .local info.
Whatever the problems are with the communication between those servers isn't fixed, but I was able to do a workaround by setting the host information on the server instead of the server's hostname on the clients.

General Support / iTalc sees ip addresses but not hostnames
« on: February 18, 2016, 10:36:17 AM »
I seem to have iTalc working reasonably well - meaning that I can start the master and 2 clients and see the client screens. I can also send a text message to both clients. let student demo, and run commands on clients.

However, the Master can only see the clients if I enter their IP Addresses. It does not find them by hostname.
FWIW, I am not able to log out users. Other details: Ubermix 14.04 with last upgrade within the past couple of weeks; iTalc version is 1:2.0.1-4ubuntu0.14.04.1

I can ping each of the clients from the master (and visaversa) by IP Address. I'm not able to ping by hostname. I know enough to know that may have to do with name resolution, but not enough to know how to fix it if that's the issue.

The Ubermix computers are in a lab in a building that uses non-Linux DHCP and DNS servers. (Each computer is able to access websites fine by name).

Getting this working is vital to using Ubermix in this lab. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone help? This is a really big problem for us and I just can't see anywhere that I'm leaving out a step.

General Support / No boot from USB after key resizing
« on: August 11, 2015, 09:14:49 AM »
I've followed the directions to "Resizing the Ubermix Key to Accommodate a Larger Base System Partition" on this page: http://ubermix.org/customization.html. I've tried more than once and am very certain that I've followed the directions correctly. However, after copying the files back to the re-sized UBERMIX key the computer will no longer boot from USB. The computer model is an HP Compaq dc5700, and I've tried booting on 2 different machines with the same result.

Note that I can get it to boot by using the boot CD option, but that's not a good solution.

This is with version 1.5, which is better for our situation.

Any help would be much appreciated,

sorry for the delay

Here's the site for the Vermont secure browsers:

http://vt.portal.airast.org/secure-browsers/

Does that help?

Thanks! I was at an SBAC training meeting this morning and they assured me that they did not expect to have any updates to the Secure Browser -- that it would be a once-a-year only release. We'll see, but it seems that the package would be good for this year.

Will the package include the required libraries: Festival and SoX
as listed at: http://vt.portal.airast.org/secure-browsers/  ?

Or maybe they're already in the UberMix install - I see that Verdana TrueType font is. Looking at the Software Center it seems like maybe Festival is but sox is not.

Thanks,

We're in Vermont and use the SBAC test. I see that this site refers to the browser as "for state testing in California". Is it the same browser that will be used in other states? Will you be making a package with new 6.5 browser for .deb as you did with 6.3.1?

Thanks,

General Support / Wacom Tablets
« on: January 23, 2015, 09:58:00 AM »
Hello,

I am trying to connect a couple of Wacom tablets to a laptop running UberMix (12.04 version). Even though there's an "app" in System Settings for 'Wacom Graphics Tablet' I only get the message "No tablet detected".

The two tablets I'm working with are an Intuos and and Intuos Pro.

Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks,

I finally got a chance to give this a try. However, when I double-click on the install-icon.sh file I get an error message instead of a RUN command to click on. The error is: 'The file "/home/administrator/Desktop/SBACSecureBrowser6.3/install-icon.sh" could not be opened.'

I tried changing it to open with "Run Software", but nothing happened except for the "throbber" spinning for a few seconds.

The permissions are Owner(Me) Read-only  Group(administrator) Read-only   Others Read-only. I presume this is fine for the installer, but would like to know if I'm wrong.

(Note that I'm trying this on an install of Ubuntu 14.04, not in UberMix, but I hope to use it in the version14 UM when it comes out and want to be prepared).

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks,

Hardware Specific / Re: sound only works for one user account
« on: April 24, 2014, 01:18:25 PM »
I'm not sure if this will help, but it's worth a check. We had trouble when trying to do some screencasts and found that we had to:
go to the Settings, then in Sound  go to the Input Tab. Raise the Input volume slider to about 50%. In Kazam, be sure Audio Source 1 is on (checked) and then choose "Built-in Analog Stereo".

Again, this may not be of any help. Sorry if it's not.

Good Luck,

How-to / Increasing the size of "generic" partition in VirtualBox
« on: April 13, 2014, 01:37:49 PM »
I recently was unable to do updates to an Ubermix machine that I had created in VirtualBox due to running out of space. I had installed Pitivi video editor and some other programs. I was able to increase the size of the drive and the "generic" partition using the steps below. Should you ever need to do this you can find instructions on the Internet, but here's a summary for what I did:

1) I created a VirtualBox machine from the Ubermix .ova file. I don't recall the exact process, but I ended up with a file called "Ubermix-1.4-disk1.vmdk".

2) There is a nice utility that you can run from the terminal called VBoxManage that can be used to resize the virtual machine. Unfortunately, VBoxManage cannot do its magic on a .vmdk file, so I had to convert it to a .vdi file. To do this I entered the VirtualBoxVMs/Ubermix1.4 folder (or whatever you named your virtual machine). Once there I was able to, in the Terminal on my Mac, enter:   VBoxManage clonehd --format VDI filename.vmdk filename.vdi

3) While still in the correct directory I was now able to increase the size of the virtual disk using this command:  VBoxManage modifyhd filename.vdi --resize #####   (where "#####" represents the size you want; example:  10240 = 10 GB)

4) Next you'll need to perform a couple of steps with a partition editor. I used GParted, based on the directions at this site:  http://spicliff.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-to-resize-virtualbox-disk-partition.html

     a) Download the   gparted-live-0.18.0-2-i486.iso   file.

     b) In VirtualBox assign the above .iso image to IDE Master. Be sure that the VM will boot from CD/DVD.

     c) If the .vdi file isn't already linked to the VM go ahead and do that.

     d) Boot the VM. It should launch into GParted. Make a clone of the .vdi file. Remove all of its partitions.

     e) Now go to sda and copy the first partition. Go to sdb, click on the unallocated space, then paste. Repeat for the other 2 partitions.

     f) Now you can resize the large partition to take up as much room as you have available.

     g) Finally, you can shut down the VM, remove the .iso image from the Storage Settings and, if desired, change the startup disk to "hard drive". Then restart the VM. If desired, you can now boot into the "generic" partition and add to/update the "factory partition" 'til your heart's content.

Others may have a better way to achieve this, and it would be great if they would add their corrections, clarifications, and new knowledge!

Thanks,

Mark

General Discussion / SBAC and 14.04

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this; let me know if I should post elsewhere.

Anyway, as UberMix based on Ubuntu 14.04 is developed have you had any experience with using the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) lock-down browser with it? (We found the version 4.0 version of the SBAC browser to work fine. When the 4.3 version came out we installed it and it seemed to work fine, but we haven't had much opportunity to test it thoroughly yet).

We use UberMix on all of the student computers at our middle school and would like to use the 14.04 version when it's ready, but will need to be sure that the SBAC Assessment works with it.

I'll be sure to post our results once we're able to begin testing.

That browser is available at:   http://sbac.portal.airast.org/browsers/

Thanks,

I don't know if this is the right way to say this, but I was updating our Ubermix image and entered "generic". I made changes, including updates. (There was a grub update which asked me where to install it -- I chose sda rather than sda1. Is that ok?)

After rebooting and then going in later to make additional changes to the base image I pressed 'e', which brought me to the screen where one normally changes aufs to generic. It was already generic.

What did I do wrong? How can I get it back so that the "base install" doesn't get changed incorrectly in the future?

Thanks

As I look into this a bit more I'd say that it's related to the update to grub2. I found posts about editing the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file, but am not sure that or how I should.
1 - Should one ignore the message at the top about not editing this file?
2 - I looked at the /etc/grub.d and /etc/default/grub files, but didn't see anything helpful there.
3 - There are 7 instances of the word "generic" in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file. Is it just a matter of replacing those 7 words with "aufs" or is it more complicated than that? (I'm assuming more complicated).

Anyway, any help in getting back to the ability to boot into Normal Mode so that kids can't make permanent changes would be much appreciated.

...gonna go watch the SuperBowl now...
