Title: Startup Loop
Post by: jrerick on July 10, 2013, 01:06:07 PM
Installing Ubermix 1.082 over 1.062.  It will install and start to load, getting as far as the splash screen and then it will restart.

It will show that it's trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe, goes to splashscreen and then restart.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Try an "Restore OS" as per the instructions here: http://ubermix.org/basics.html (http://ubermix.org/basics.html) under "Quick recovery features".

Same Problem occurred.  Same scenario.  Tried both Restore OS and Restore Unit Completely.  Just sticks in a loop.

OK, so let's get some more information. Reboot and press ESC like you are going to reset, then press "e" on the Normal Boot line, change to "set gfxpayload=text" and erase "splash" from the linux line. Then ctrl-x to boot and watch for the last thing it says before rebooting.

Did two boots as I wasn't able to get all the information the first one...

First boot -
Speech-Dispatcher disabled; edit etc/default/speech-dispatcher
Saned disabled; edit etc/default/saned

Second Boot -
Just Speech-Dispatcher, Saned did not show up.

Seems like this was a bad install. Did you see any errors during the installation process? You can scroll up and see all the text that appears during install by pressing Shift+Page Up.

Didn't see any errors... any way to wipe clean and start fresh?

Boot from the key and choose option 5 (Expert) then the Reset Partition Table option. Then reboot from the key and install.

Did not work.. same errors.

Created new generic key (not a build like the other keys were) and tried that.  Same error.  Only netbook I have that does this.

So I'm going to update..

I found a HDD Wipe program (DBAN) that wiped the entire drive.  So I was able to start with a clean slate.

What I did was install an old build of Ubermix (1.068 I believe) and that worked fine.  I was able to do everything in that.  I think took a new copy of 1.082 and loaded it and ran into the same problem as before.  I was able to update for the Cedar Trail problem (I was thinking this would be the cause), but ran into the same startup issue.  So I'm able to figure out it's the .082 build and my netbook.  When it did get past the splash screen, I was able to do some things, but not much because time was limited.  So I'm wondering, what the best way to update from .068 where my settings worked to .082 without installing or using a new key.

Seeing a similar issue, but mine is not restarting.   It just hangs on a blank screen during startup.  The weird thing is it is 50% of them, but they're all Dell 2120's.  Sometimes it works fine, sometimes powering it off and on a few times fixes it.   Did the text boot and had the same disabled items as the OP.  However when I did the text startup it actually got to the desktop.
Tried following individual USB keys to see if some are bad or good, but that didn't seem to follow any trend.  Expert options force reset works in some cases, but not all.  I've tried new keys and redownloading Ubermix.  Something seems to be up with the latest version.

Anything else we can do?

It looks like after using the text boot, some of them are starting up correctly after that.  There still are many that do not start up correctly.
A few said "Asking for cache data failed" when starting up.
All the netbooks so far were ordered in the same batch.  Never had this issue with them before with previous versions.

Looks like this is an issue with the video card. Fixed by adding 'nomodeset' to the end of the 'linux' lines in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Steps to permanently fix are as follows:

  • Reboot the computer and press ESC immediately after your computer manufacturer's splash screen disappears (you should see a flashing cursor in the top left corner for a few seconds - press the escape key within 3 seconds to view the menu.)
  • Select "Normal Boot" from the menu (but don't press enter) and press the "e" key on your keyboard
  • Select the line in the box that begins with the word "linux" and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Add a space, then the word 'nomodeset'
  • Select the next line in the box (begins with the word "initrd") and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Backspace over the four letters "aufs" and replace them with "generic". Do not add any spaces.
  • Then press "ctrl+x" on your keyboard to boot
  • Once booted, open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg'
  • Add the 'nomodeset' to the end of all three 'linux' lines under each 'menuentry' near the bottom of the file
  • Save and reboot

This seemed to help.  Reduced the number of installs that do not boot.  Seems to be an issue with the splash screen or something with the video during the boot process.  There are still a few that will not boot even after making the change above and recreating the key.  It's like sometimes it does not apply the change to the grub.cfg and I have to go in and manually do it again on a new install.  Made sure I did Expert Options > Reset Partition after trying to install the new version.

Any ideas what could be causing the issue and how to streamline the key to make the install have a higher success rate?

Could you post some hardware details about the machines you're installing?

Dell 2120:

Chipset
IntelĀ® NM10
Video Card
IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
Display
10.1" WSVGA (1024x600) Anti-glare LED-backlit
Connectivity
10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
Wireless LAN and WiMax Options:
One of these, forgot which one:
Broadcom BGN (802.11 b/g/n 1x1)
Broadcom AGN (802.11 a/g/n 2x2)

We also have Dell 2100s and Dell 2110s.

Thankfully we are not buying anymore netbooks.  The wireless cards in these Dells are awful and once you get a bunch going in one room they begin to degrade performance.

Give ubermix 1.3 a try - new kernel is likely to perform better on older hardware.
