Creating some keys as I type this with 1.3 and using the Broadcom firmware.  I'll move on to the proprietary driver one next if this isn't working out.
No hidden SSID.  Found out a few years ago in testing that Ubuntu does not like those and the advantages were not worth it at all.

It POSTs then you see the (orange?) screen tint like Ubuntu usually does.  Then when it progresses where the splash screen is supposed to load it goes black and the backlight is on but nothing on the screen.

Yes.  I've tried that solution.  Doesn't seem to help all that much.

Dell 2100/2110/2120
I've been having an issue the last 2 versions of UM.  When booting it gets to the point where the splash screen should pop up, but it never does.  It never boots past that point.  If i change the grub.cfg to text and delete splash it will boot correctly.

Cisco 1142N Wireless APs, gigabit infrastructure

This has been an ongoing issue with Ubermix for many versions.  In a cart there are always 1/4 or more of the Netbooks that will not connect.  They say they cannot detect any wireless networks and ask to confirm the wireless network password.  Sometimes after restarting they connect or if you wait 5 minutes or so.  You can get a few going, but once you start bringing a whole cart into the fray there are always a few that drop off.

Troubleshooting steps:
-Updated Ubermix as new versions came out
-Installed the drivers for Broadcom recommended here recently and on the Ubuntu forums (1-2 years ago)
-Had a consultant company that is a Cisco gold partner and has installed hundreds of Cisco Wireless deployments look over our network.  Changes made to improve AP deployment.
-APs were VLANed by building
-Upgraded firewall, core switch, gig switches network wide

We also have Windows laptop carts, Mac laptop carts, and a Chrome cart.  The network improvements helped those devices, but they do not have 1/10 the network issues of the Ubermix Dell Netbooks.  We have a handful of Windows XP Dell 2100 series netbooks, but they do not have network issues like these.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about resolving these network issues?  Is it a hardware limitation?

Dell 2120:

Chipset
IntelĀ® NM10
Video Card
IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
Display
10.1" WSVGA (1024x600) Anti-glare LED-backlit
Connectivity
10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
Wireless LAN and WiMax Options:
One of these, forgot which one:
Broadcom BGN (802.11 b/g/n 1x1)
Broadcom AGN (802.11 a/g/n 2x2)

We also have Dell 2100s and Dell 2110s.

Thankfully we are not buying anymore netbooks.  The wireless cards in these Dells are awful and once you get a bunch going in one room they begin to degrade performance.

Looks like this is an issue with the video card. Fixed by adding 'nomodeset' to the end of the 'linux' lines in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Steps to permanently fix are as follows:

  • Reboot the computer and press ESC immediately after your computer manufacturer's splash screen disappears (you should see a flashing cursor in the top left corner for a few seconds - press the escape key within 3 seconds to view the menu.)
  • Select "Normal Boot" from the menu (but don't press enter) and press the "e" key on your keyboard
  • Select the line in the box that begins with the word "linux" and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Add a space, then the word 'nomodeset'
  • Select the next line in the box (begins with the word "initrd") and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Backspace over the four letters "aufs" and replace them with "generic". Do not add any spaces.
  • Then press "ctrl+x" on your keyboard to boot
  • Once booted, open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg'
  • Add the 'nomodeset' to the end of all three 'linux' lines under each 'menuentry' near the bottom of the file
  • Save and reboot

This seemed to help.  Reduced the number of installs that do not boot.  Seems to be an issue with the splash screen or something with the video during the boot process.  There are still a few that will not boot even after making the change above and recreating the key.  It's like sometimes it does not apply the change to the grub.cfg and I have to go in and manually do it again on a new install.  Made sure I did Expert Options > Reset Partition after trying to install the new version.

Any ideas what could be causing the issue and how to streamline the key to make the install have a higher success rate?

It looks like after using the text boot, some of them are starting up correctly after that.  There still are many that do not start up correctly.
A few said "Asking for cache data failed" when starting up.
All the netbooks so far were ordered in the same batch.  Never had this issue with them before with previous versions.

Seeing a similar issue, but mine is not restarting.   It just hangs on a blank screen during startup.  The weird thing is it is 50% of them, but they're all Dell 2120's.  Sometimes it works fine, sometimes powering it off and on a few times fixes it.   Did the text boot and had the same disabled items as the OP.  However when I did the text startup it actually got to the desktop.
Tried following individual USB keys to see if some are bad or good, but that didn't seem to follow any trend.  Expert options force reset works in some cases, but not all.  I've tried new keys and redownloading Ubermix.  Something seems to be up with the latest version.

Anything else we can do?

Ok so I uninstalled some packages to make space.  I uninstalled Chrome and Google Earth temporarily just to make sure I had enough space.  After I installed Oracle Java, I reinstalled Chrome + Earth through the package mananger.  The showed up and ran fine, but when I rebooted into the user profile I get errors launching Chrome and Google Earth doesn't even show up.
It says Could not execute 'Google Chrome': Failed to execute child process "/opt/google/chrome/google-chrome" (no such file or directory)
Doing whereis google-chrome
shows:
google-chrome: (blank)

Is there some sort of file permission that needs setup?

Thanks for the updated directions, they worked great.  Updated the browsers and flash packages also.

After I resized the partition to 5gigs (tried to go smaller, but it wouldn't take those values), I get errors when updating the key about running out of space.  I think the page said the newer version automatically resizes the key.  Does this mean that there is no way to use a 2gb flashdrive after this?  Any recommendations to follow these steps, but fit it onto a 2gb flashdrive?

Thanks.

I'm having issues installing jre 6u31.  I've tried a few of the install scripts people have made and they all get errors.  Also having issues updating browsers, it says insufficient space?  What's the best solution to get the browsers and plugins up to date?
Thanks.
