The laptops have 512 mob RAM. What's the minimum needed for Ubermix?

Hi, I'm new to ubermix and linux for that matter. I have some old Dells lattitude 505's I'm trying to install to. They boot, however once the launcher is loaded you only see the icon for the favourites and text relating to what the favourites are no graphical icons. Therefore it is completely unusable. I have installed to other hardware successfully so I know the build on the USB key is good. The wireless adapter has not installed but this is minor compared to the lack of a proper desktop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
