Ubermix on Dell Vostro 2420
« on: January 11, 2013, 08:07:31 AM »
Hi Folks,

Trying to get ubermix 11.04 to run on new dell laptop.  The image works fine on dell netbooks 21xx and dell desktops.

I can install fine (via usb), but after restart, it only shows blank screen (briefly purple and then just black- no text, splash screen or anything).

I can install and loads fine, standard ubuntu (loaded 12.04)?

Appreciate any help. I am new to linux, so learning stuff.

Will try that. Thinking maybe something with graphic drivers is different with Dell 2420 that 12.04 has that 11.04 does not.

Tried Ubermix 12.04 and does same thing. Installs fine, no errors, but on start up, just blank (black screen). Left it loading for 30minutes, no change??

Any ideas??

Looks like this is an issue with the video card. Fixed by adding 'nomodeset' to the end of the 'linux' lines in /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Steps to permanently fix are as follows:

  • Reboot the computer and press ESC immediately after your computer manufacturer's splash screen disappears (you should see a flashing cursor in the top left corner for a few seconds - press the escape key within 3 seconds to view the menu.)
  • Select "Normal Boot" from the menu (but don't press enter) and press the "e" key on your keyboard
  • Select the line in the box that begins with the word "linux" and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Add a space, then the word 'nomodeset'
  • Select the next line in the box (begins with the word "initrd") and move the cursor to the end of the line.
  • Backspace over the four letters "aufs" and replace them with "generic". Do not add any spaces.
  • Then press "ctrl+x" on your keyboard to boot
  • Once booted, open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg'
  • Add the 'nomodeset' to the end of all three 'linux' lines under each 'menuentry' near the bottom of the file
  • Save and reboot

Got wireless to work on 11.04, by installing, via synaptic, linux-backports-modules-cw:2.6.38-10.6- compat-wireless linux module for version "".

Thanks Jim.
